October 21, 2026 Phoenix Hailstorm: What Happened and What to Do About Your Car
The October 21, 2026 hailstorm left drivers across central and north Phoenix checking their vehicles for dents. Here is what happened, which areas were affected, and how to get your car inspected and start a comprehensive insurance claim.
What happened on October 21
Around 3:30 PM on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, a severe thunderstorm moved northeast across central and north Phoenix. The National Weather Service warned of baseball-size hail over Metrocenter and tennis-ball-size hail over Deer Valley Airport. Spotters photographed stones up to 2 inches — the photographed size and the warning sizes are different measures of the storm's hail threat.
The hardest-hit areas included 19th Avenue and Peoria Avenue, 19th Avenue and Dunlap, 23rd Avenue and Cactus, Metrocenter, and North Mountain. The storm continued northeast toward Cave Creek, Carefree, and North Scottsdale. Being in the storm's path does not mean every vehicle was damaged, but cars parked outdoors should be checked.
Neighborhoods and ZIP codes affected
Hardest-hit areas (confirmed damage):
- 19th Ave & Peoria Ave
- 19th Ave & Dunlap
- 23rd Ave & Cactus
- Metrocenter
- North Mountain
Also in the storm's path (check your car):
- Deer Valley
- Glendale
- Peoria
- Sun City
- Cave Creek / Carefree
- North Scottsdale
ZIP codes with confirmed damage: 85021, 85029, 85051, 85053, 85023, 85020.
ZIP codes in the warning area: 85022, 85027, 85024, 85085, 85302, 85304, 85306, 85308, 85345, 85381, 85331, 85377, 85255, 85262.
If your car was parked outside in these areas on the afternoon of October 21, get it inspected even if the damage looks minor. Hail dents are much easier to see under proper lighting.
How to check your car for hail damage
- Park in the shade. Bright glare can hide shallow dents. Inspect only when it is safe to do so.
- Look along the roof, hood, and trunk at a low angle. Watch for small dimples, ripples, or breaks in reflected lines.
- Use your phone flashlight. Move the light across the panel and change your viewing angle to reveal uneven reflections.
- Check trim and windshield glass. Look for dented trim, chipped glass, and cracks as well as damage to painted panels.
- Document what you find. Take clear photos of each affected panel and note the storm date, October 21, 2026, and where the vehicle was parked.
A driveway check cannot reveal every dent. A free inspection under professional PDR lighting gives you a clearer picture of the damage. Avoid attempting to push or pull dents yourself, which can damage the paint or stretch the metal.
Does Arizona insurance cover hail?
Comprehensive coverage generally covers hail damage; liability-only coverage does not. Hail is a comprehensive claim, not an at-fault accident. Your comprehensive deductible applies, so check your declarations page or ask your agent to confirm your coverage and any reporting requirements.
To start a claim, contact your insurer, provide the storm date and your vehicle's location, share your damage photos, and keep your claim number. Storm Shield confirms coverage before work begins and works directly with your adjuster. Ask your agent how your specific policy treats comprehensive claims rather than assuming a claim cannot affect your rates.
You can choose your repair shop. Arizona law generally restricts insurers from requiring a specific shop, so you do not have to assume the insurer's preferred shop is your only option. Learn more about our insurance claim assistance.
Why paintless dent repair
Paintless dent repair (PDR) reshapes metal from behind the panel or uses glue tabs from the outside to restore the surface without sanding, body filler, or repainting. For suitable hail dents, it preserves your original factory paint and helps protect your car's resale value.
PDR is usually less expensive than conventional body work because there is no paint or filler. Not all damage is suitable: cracked paint or damaged glass may need other repairs, which we identify during inspection. Most Phoenix vehicles take 2–5 days depending on dent count; severe damage with hundreds of dents can take 1–2 weeks. We give you a timeline at inspection.
